Fiber Optic Technology Is All Around

Once it was unique, fascinating and only for the very few and privileged. Now it is all around us and most of the time we don’t even know it is there. This is the story of most new technological breakthroughs. If you think of the television then not too long ago that was for the very few and rich people. Soon more and more people wanted it and the prices went down but next came the color television. The story goes on and on…

The fiber optic technology has been through the same evolution. Once it was the exclusive wonder of the laser labs and scientists and most people didn’t even know it existed. Today it can be found in everything from children’s toys to fiber optic pool lights to name a few.

What made Fiber Optic Technology a thing for the masses?
Even though it might sound a bit odd it was due to errors in the materials. Simply by having flaws in the produced fiber optic cables the public came to know to fiber optics.

The first and foremost reason for the development in the fiber optic technology was the need for fast transmission of digital data. This data consists of intermittent on and off bursts, making it quite fragile. A line can only hold the amount of data that the rapidity of the switching can endure. This is also the determining factor of its purity and that is why constant testing is vital to the outcome. Only by doing a massive amount of testing the best fibers can be found and that are the fibers that can be used for data transmission.

That is the reason that every single string of fiber optic cable is tested many times for data transfer quality before being bundled into the final fiber optic cord. Many strings do not pass the tests and therefore there is a significant amount of “waste” produced in the form of discarded fibers. Instead of just throwing these fibers out because they can’t transfer high quality data signals they can still transmit light waves just fine.

The Waste Benefit
As the bad quality fibers can be used to channel light some entrepreneurs though of using these fibers to send light to whatever location the light was needed. The uses are many and more and more are developed daily. Everything from modern effective lightning are all based on the fiber optic technology and the waste fibers.

The first (or some of them) people that used fiber optics for lightning effects were the special effect makers in the movie business. The fibers aren’t creating the heat that normal lightning does and that helped the problem of melting the fragile plastics used as effects. Secondly the lighting was actually even more realistic and made the movie effect even more believable.

Now designers picked up the idea and mainly due to the same properties as the effect makers. Now we all remember the little “laser pens” that were extremely popular some years back. These were mostly used for fun and every time the lights went out someone would start to play with their pen and sending red light beams all over the place. After that is were the homes and the small and colorful fiber optic bonsai trees that every kid would want in their room.

Luckily we have seen that over time the designs have become more elegant and the fiber optic technology can now be blended into almost any lighting thing available without you knowing it.

The latest thing for home interior designers is the use of fiber optics in normal home lighting applications. Besides giving a better light the level of efficiency is also much higher and the power usage is far less and the solution is therefore much cheaper than the normal lighting options. It is however unlikely that we have seen the end usage of the fiber optic technology yet.
